抗生素是人類歷史上最重要的發明之一。 在1928年, 亞歷山大·弗萊明（Alexander Fleming) 發現了第一個真正現代的抗生素, 青黴素 (Penicillin) , 因而獲得1945年諾貝爾醫學獎。 據估計, 僅青黴素一項就挽救了全球2億條性命(1)。根據美國感染病死亡數據, 在美國抗生素每年可挽救20萬條生命並延長平均壽命5-10年(2)。 但抗生素的過度使用, 不適當的處方和廣泛的農業用途正在導致全球抗生素耐藥菌的迅速增加。 世界衛生組織宣布, 抗生素耐藥性是當今對全球健康, 糧食安全和發展最大的威脅之一。
急性腸胃炎 - 脫水的風險
急性腸胃炎造成的最嚴重的問題就是脫水。 在腹瀉期間, 水和電解質（鈉, 氯化物, 鉀和碳酸氫鹽）會通過糞便, 嘔吐物, 汗液, 尿液和呼吸而流失。 當這些損失沒有得到彌補時, 就會發生脫水(2)。

抗生素使用也可能對健康產生負面影響。 其中最常見的就是抗生素引起的腹瀉, 影響大約5-30%抗生素使用的患者。 抗生素引起的腹瀉主要原因是抗生素破壞腸道菌叢群, 破壞菌種的代謝功能, 導致病原菌的過度生長。 通常在大多數患者中只要終止抗生素會使用, 腸道菌叢群就能恢復功能, 並改善腹瀉症狀。 但有20%患者, 無法正常修飾腸道菌叢群, 防止伺機性病原菌如Clostridium difficile移位增生。3 某些特定的益生菌菌株, 列如羅伊氏乳酸桿菌DSM17938已顯示可通過改善腸道菌叢群來預防抗生素引起的腹瀉。
